Take a shortcut if it is reasonable.
For example, if you know four of the numbers to a five digit lock, then put those four in and then just cycle through and try all of the possibilities for the last digit. It will likely be faster than finding the clue that gives you the final digit and sometimes may be the way that the game was designed for you to solve it.
